An old image from China shared as the crowd at Sunita Kejriwal’s rally in Gujarat

The viral image shows a crowd in China gathered to welcome the Olympic torch and it dates back to 2008. It has no link to Sunita Kejriwal’s road show in Gujarat.

Polling for the third phase of Lok Sabha Election 2024 is underway across 25 constituencies in Gujarat on Today, May 7. In the third phase of the Lok Sabha elections, voting is being held across 94 constituencies, covering 10 states and one Union Territory. 

Sunita Kejriwal, wife of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, held a road show in support of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidates in Gujarat on 2 May. Against this backdrop, an image depicting a large crowd is circulating alongside claims that it shows the gathering at Sunita Kejriwal’s roadshow in Gujarat, held in protest against the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal. 

But did the crowd seen in the image really come to Sunita Kejriwal’s rally? Let’s check the truth.

Fact Check- 

We started our investigation by conducting a reverse image search on Google and the results led us to a many news reports featuring the same image. It has been described as being from Guangzhou province of China. According to reports, this photo was taken when a huge crowd had gathered in the city to welcome the Olympic torch.

 Upon further search we also found the same image on the stock image website ‘Flickr‘ which was shared there on 13 May, 2008. According to the information given there, “This crowd showed up for the Olympic Torch passing through”. 

We found this image in many other media reports which can be seen below. It states “In 2008, on the day when the Olympic torch was relayed in Guangzhou, the Grandview Plaza was crowded with people”.

Sunita Kejriwal has conducted roadshows in Gujarat as part of the election campaign, where she also spoke out against the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal.
You can see the video of Sunita Kejriwal’s Gujarat rally below which is quite different from the viral image.
