This video shows Pidakala War, where hundreds of people engage in a ritualistic battle by throwing cow dung at each other in an Andhra Pradesh temple.

A video showing a massive crowd of people throwing something at each other is going viral on social media. It is being claimed that in Kairuppala village, under Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh, BJP supporters have pelted stones on a mosque.

The caption states, “AP: BJP supporters are throwing stones at an old mosque in Karupula village of Kurnool district”

However, in our investigation this claim turned out to be false.

We started our investigation by conducting a keyword and reverse image search on Google and the results led us to Facebook page named Mana Adoni  The same viral video was uploaded there on 11 April 2024. The caption states “Sri Kalika Veerabhadra Swamy’s Nuggulata War (Pidakala War) on the occasion of Ugadi festival in Kairuppula village”. The same video he had uploaded on his Instagram page also.

We have contacted this person for further clarification then he told us that this video was captured by his friend and it shows Ugadi festival in Veerabhadra Swamy temple. He added that this Karupala village in Andhra Pradesh celebrates the Hindu New Year with a ceremony called Ugadi. The people split up into two group on this day and then form teams and throw cow dung on each other. It is like a fight and they use dung as weapons and throw it at each other. This fight is called Pidakala Samaram or Pidakala War.

Upon further search, we found reports published regarding this festival in a village in Andhra Pradesh (Andhra Pradesh Ugadi festival), where on the occasion of Ugadi festival, people attack each other with cow dung.

Taking account of these evidences we can say that this viral video does not show BJP supporters pelting stones at an old mosque in Andhra Pradesh.
