Many regions of North America witnessed the total solar eclipse a couple of days ago. It started from the Pacific coast of Mexico and ended at the Atlantic coast of Canada. Thousands of people gathered to witness this awestruck phenomenon.
Against this backdrop, a video of many people gathered at a sea and watching a solar eclipse is going viral on social media. Users are claiming that the incident took place in Chile where people witnessed the recent total solar eclipse.
However, Fact Crescendo found the claim to be misleading. This is an old video of an eclipse from Chile and not the recent total solar eclipse.
Fact Check-
A Google Reverse Image Search on a keyframe led us to the same video uploaded on a YouTube channel on 29 March this year. The caption reads, “People in Chile gather at the beach to witness solar eclipse”
Since this video was uploaded in March, it is not possible that this can be the video of the recent total solar eclipse.
We found the same video posted on Facebook in November, 2022.
A relevant keyword search led us to a report published on the Panorama website on 15 December 2020. According to the report, this is an incident from 2020 when the sky in Argentina and Chile turned black due to total solar eclipse. This phenomenon was also visible in Italy.
Conclusion:
Fact Crescendo found the claim to be misleading. This is an old video of an eclipse from Chile and not the recent total solar eclipse.
