People attacking the BJP party office out of anger goes viral falsely linking to the 2024 general election

General elections will be held in India from 19 April 2024 to 1 June 2024 to elect the 543 members of the 18th Lok Sabha. As the general elections approach, many images and videos are surfing the internet daily. Meanwhile, a video of a group of people vandalising furniture and destroying posters from a party office has been widely circulating on social media. The users who share the video claim that it demonstrates the widespread outrage of people against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2024 general elections, and they were destroying the party office.


But is this video about the current rage against the BJP? Let’s check the truth

Fact Check-

We started our investigation by conducting keyword and reverse image search on Google and the results led us to a report published by Bengali media outlet ABP on 24 March, 2021. The report carried a screenshot from the viral video. According to the report, The BJP announced candidates for 12 constituencies in Malda district on 18 March 2021 and then party members expressed discontent with the candidate selection for six seats. That dissatisfaction over candidate selection led to the vandalisation of the BJP party office in Malda’s Gazole, resulting in the suspension of the party’s then leader, Sagarika Sarkar.

Upon further search, we found a video report uploaded on India TV’s official YouTube channel on 19 March, 2021 regarding this incident. According to the report, a group of BJP employees vandalised the party headquarters in Malda, West Bengal, because their leader was not given a ticket to contest in the assembly elections in 2021.


So, the video of people attacking the BJP party office is not recent. This is an old incident that happened in Malda, West Bengal is falsely linked to the upcoming 2024 General elections.
