A video of Rahul Gandhi asking people to bang utensils and switch on mobile lights while addressing a rally is going viral on social media. In the video, Rahul Gandhi can be heard saying, “Thali bajao, thali bajao, thali bajao… Mobile phone ki light on karo, light on karo”

Sharing the video, social media users are mocking Rahul Gandhi saying that he does not make any sense during his speech. 

However, Fact Crescendo found the claim to be misleading. This is an edited clip. In the real video Rahul Gandhi was criticizing PM Modi when the latter asked the public to bang utensils and switch on mobile lights during COVID-19 pandemic.

Fact Check- 

A relevant keyword search led us to a video uploaded on News Tak’s official YouTube Channel on 17 November 2023. The caption of the video reads, “Rahul Gandhi mimics PM Modi in a rally. Switch on the lights, clap”

From 23 seconds onwards of the video, Rahul Gandhi can be heard saying, “Do you remember? During COVID someone’s friend, someone’s brother, someone’s father suffered from the disease. Millions of people suffered from COVID. What did the Congress party do? We gave food packets at home. Youth congress worked hard and delivered oxygen cylinders and medicines to home. What did Narendra Modi say? Thali bajao, thali bajao, thali bajao… Mobile phone ki light on karo, light on karo. What does it mean? Does this make sense”

Apart from this, we found The Telegraph’s report dated 17 November 2023. According to the report, Rahul Gandhi, while addressing public rallies in Rajasthan, criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. He referred to Modi’s call for citizens to bang thalis (plates) and switch on mobile phone torchlights during the crisis. He questioned the effectiveness of such actions when people were suffering due to oxygen shortages and lack of medical treatment.
