A video of Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud walking out of the ongoing Electoral Bonds case hearing during Solicitor General Tushar Mehta’s arguments has gone viral on social media.
The caption of the post states that “How can the #CJI behave in this manner? SG is presenting his arguments before him and without adjourning, he and other judges simply walked away.. This is gross humiliation and insult to the Govt of India.. All the judges including the CJI Chandrachud should be hauled up and, forced to resign by the President of India. Totally mannerless and ARTOGANT this man Chandrachud is.. He and other judges are taking vengeance against the Govt of India.. I will be shortly post a thread listing reasons, behind this attitude of judges”.
Fact Check-
After analyzing the viral video, we discovered that Solicitor General Tushar Mehta was presenting arguments to the Chief Justice of India regarding donations received by political parties through the now-banned electoral bonds scheme. We used this information to conduct keyword search on Google.
Then we discovered the complete proceedings on the official YouTube channel of the Supreme Court of India. It was revealed that these proceedings occurred on 18 March 2024. Recently, the apex court ordered the State Bank to make public the data of donations received by political parties through electoral bonds.
The viral video begins at the 23-minute mark and ends at the 27:06 timestamp, where it appears like CJI is about to stand from his seat. He can be seen talking with colleagues and adjusting his position. However, the complete video shows CJI adjusting his chair and continuing to listen to Tushar Mehta’s arguments. Watching the entire footage, one can see that the CJI did not rise from his chair.
After watching the complete video we can understand that Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, did not walk away in the middle of the hearing. The viral claim is false.
