A screenshot of a provocative quote attributed to the Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is going viral on social media. According to the claim, CJI DY Chandrachud had asked people to protest against the government and demand their rights.
The quote reads, “We are trying our best to save the constitution of India, democracy of India, but your cooperation is also very important for this. All people should unite and come out on the streets and ask the government about their rights. This dictatorial government will scare people, threaten but you don’t have to be afraid, keep courage and ask the government to account. I am with you.”
However, Fact Crescendo found the claim to be false. CJI DY Chandrachud did not make any such quotes.
Fact Check-
A relevant keyword search on Google led us to the Times of India report published on 15 August 2023. According to the report, the Supreme Court has issued a press release denouncing a fake social media post falsely attributing statements to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) and calling for public protests against the government. The Court had clarified that neither the CJI nor the Court itself had issued such a statement. The post is fake, malicious, and unauthorized.
We also found a tweet by the Live Law in this matter. The tweet has the image of the press release. The tweet reads, “Supreme Court issued a statement regarding a fake-news being spread in the social media falsely quoting the Chief Justice of India. Law authorities are taking appropriate action in this regard.”
After this, we searched for the press release issued by the Public Relation office of the Supreme Court which you can see below.
Conclusion:
Fact Crescendo found the claim to be false. The Supreme Court had released a press note calling it fake and malicious. The Court had clarified that neither the CJI nor the Court itself had issued such a statement.
