The viral image shows man injured during a protest in Kashmir in July 2016
During the ongoing farmers’ protest, protesters have accused police officials of using pellet guns at the Shambhu and Khanauri border crossings in Haryana and Punjab. While Haryana’s DGP Shatrujeet Kapur, has refuted the allegations, but the medical examinations on the injured protestors have revealed proof of the use of pellets.
Amidst this, an image of a person’s face covered with small black wounds and some ointment appears to have been applied on it is going viral on social media. The users who shared the image claim that it depicts a wounded farmer injured during the protest.
Fact Check-
We began our investigation by conducting a reverse image search on Google, which led us to to a news report by the New Indian Express published September 16, 2016, that featured the same viral image. According to a report, the man’s name is Mohammad Imran Parray, and he was wounded after being hit by pellets during a protest in Kashmir. The incident occurred in 2016, and Parray was reportedly one of the victims who were injured by Indian security forces’ pellet firing.
The picture was credited to the news agency Associated Press (AP). AP had published the same image on 13July, 2016, with a description stating that it was captured by photographer Dar Yasin the same day. It mentions that “Mohammad Imran Parray, who got wounded after being hit by pellets during a protest, recovers at a hospital in Srinagar, Indian controlled Kashmir, July 13, 2016”.
In further search, we found a news report by India Times published on 14 July 2016, which also featured the viral image. As per the report, after the death of Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Burhan Wani in July 2016, violent demonstrations and stone-pelting erupted in Kashmir. To control the situation, police were dealing with them with pellet guns, which caused injuries to many individuals.
Hence, we can ascertain that the viral image is old and was unrelated to farmers’ protest.
