Did Mallikarjun Kharge say that Congress only divides the country? Know the truth

Currently, a video of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge is going viral on social media. In the video he can be heard saying that Congress only divides the country. 

However, Fact Crescendo found that this is an edited video. In the real video Mallikarjun said that the Modi government always says that Congress divides the country. 

What’s the claim? 

In the video, Mallikarjun said, “Like always, Congress divides the country. In the name of caste, Congress divides the country.”

Fact Check- 

A relevant keyword search led us to a video uploaded on Indian National Congress’ official YouTube channel on 15 February 2024. The caption of the video reads, “In Bihar, Mallikarjun Kharge targeted PM Modi, Nitish Kumar and BJP”

In the video, Mallikarjun was speaking about Nitish Kumar joining hands with BJP even when he had said that he will never do that. He was also explaining to the crowd the importance of caste census. He said, “Brothers, Rahul Gandhi demanded something, even we and our party have the same demand. The demand is caste census. And we will do it if our party comes to power. This census will provide us information where people from different castes and communities are and where they are staying and what are their conditions after independence. To get an idea about all this the census is necessary. How many graduates came from backward communities, scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, minorities and from below poverty line groups, How many upper caste people progressed in life etc. To know all this we have demanded a caste census. What is wrong with this? And Modi says this always that Congress divides the country. Divides in the name of castes. When did we do this? We want to give justice to people.”

Fact Crescendo found that only a small portion of the real video was shared to spread misinformation. In the real video, Mallikarjun Kharge was saying that PM Modi always says that Congress divides the country on the basis of castes.
