The police tried to stop the agitating farmers from Punjab and Haryana who were heading towards Delhi. There have been reports of violence between the police and the protestors.
Against this backdrop, an image of a man crossing the police barricade holding a sword in his hand is going viral on social media. Users are claiming that this is a recent image of the current Farmers’ protest.
However, Fact Crescendo found the claim to be misleading. This is an old image not not of the current protest.
Sharing the image, a user wrote, “Dilli ki sadkon pe dhaan katayi karta ek garib kisan (This is a poor farmer harvesting crops on the streets of Delhi)”
Fact Check-
A Google Reverse Image Search led us to the same image published on the Business Standard website on 26 January 2021. According to the report, this is an incident during India’s 72nd Republic Day when Farmers who were protesting that time tried to cross a police barricade in Akshardham.
According to another report, the incident is a photograph of a tractor rally organized by farmers on the occasion of the 72nd Republic Day. It was decided that it would be a peaceful protest but a section of them desecrated the Indian national flag on the Red Fort. After this incident, there was a clash between the police and the protestors in Delhi. In this photo, a man stands on a police barricade with a sword.
Conclusion:
Fact Crescendo found that an old image of farmers’ protest in 2021 shared without proper context. This image is not of ongoing Farmer protest
