The viral video is from January 2023 and it is unrelated to the recent violence in Haldwani.

On 8 February 2024, violent clashes broke out in Haldwani, Uttarakhand after the demolition of an illegal madrasa and mosque following a court order which took place in the Banbhoolpura area whose residents are predominantly Muslims. The demolition triggered the violence in the town leaving six people dead and more than a 100 injured. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said a police station would be built on the land “freed from encroachment”.

Amidst this scenario, a video of a young girl crying while pleading not to be evicted from her home in Haldwani is viral on social media with the claim that it is a recent video.

The caption of the video states, “The situation in Haldwani is distressing; it’s important to promote unity and respect for the rights of all individuals, including Indian Muslims, to live peacefully in India”.

Fact Check-

We started our investigation by running a reverse image search on Google, whose results led us to a tweet by Media Company Brut India along with a longer version of this video. Sharing the viral video on 5 January 2023, the caption states, “About 50,000 people near Haldwani station in Uttarakhand faced the threat of homelessness. But then the Supreme Court came to their rescue.”

As per reports, in December 2022, the Uttarakhand High Court ordered the residents of Haldwani to evacuate the area with the claim that the land belongs to the Indian Railways. This order instigated heavy protests in Haldwani. After this, the Supreme Court ordered to halt the demolition drive in Haldwani and asked the government to come with a ‘practical solution’ to the problem providing relief to the protestors.

In further search, we found the same video also posted on the twitter handle of Free Press Journal on 5 January 2023, confirming that the video is from last year and not recent.

The description part in the Youtube video mentions that, “A little girl made an emotional appeal to PM Modi. She requested that she should not be evicted. Thousands of Haldwani women have been holding candlelight marches, sit-ins, and prayers to stop the eviction. The SC stayed the eviction till further notice”.
