A video of domestic violence in a family in Pakistan goes viral with misleading claims

The video is from Lahore, Pakistan. It shows an incident of domestic violence and is unrelated to the marriage with a minor girl.

A video of a man assaulting a child and then threatening to kill his wife with a rifle is going viral on social media with a claim that it shows a Muslim man who married a minor and then threatened to kill as she refused to sleep with him.
The video shows a man pushing a young girl away, as she cries for her mother and later the same man is seen in another room getting out a rifle as other men rush to stop him and take the rifle away from him.

The caption of the post states, “A Muslim marries a 12 year old girl. She refuses to go to the marital bed. This hurts the man’s feelings, so he goes to find his gun and kill her. “No, no” say his friends. “We are not #Savages. Show her your power as a man. Rape her!”

We started our investigation by running a Google reverse image search, whose result led us to a tweet by a Pakistani journalist named  Imtiaz Chandio . In this tweet, while sharing the viral video, he has written, “Someone has sent this video, in which a husband tried to kill his wife with Kalashnikov during a domestic dispute in South Cantonment; relatives saved the wife from being killed by the husband.

We found that the video is from Lahore, Pakistan and the man resorted to extreme violence after a domestic dispute with this wife. Further in the investigation we found a tweet from Lahore Police. According to this post shared on 11September, 2023, a case number 3426/23 has been registered against this incident at Police Station South Cantonment and further investigation is underway. 

Upon further investigation, we found a report on Pakistani news website Express. In which there are screenshots of the viral video and information has been given that in Lahore, a man named Khurram Shabbir picked up a gun to kill his wife after a fight. Other family members stopped him and saved the wife from the husband. The woman lodged a complaint against her husband, after which the police arrested him from South Cantonment area of ​​Lahore. 

This news has been published by other media outlets. You can see the news here , here and here. In all these, viral videos have been posted and it has been described as domestic violence. 

The accused is Khurram Shabbir, a resident of Lahore, who tried to kill his wife. After which the police arrested him from South Cantonment area of ​​Lahore.
