Is this video showing a British oil tanker attacked by Houthi missile? Know the truth

The viral video is from Oman’s territorial waters and has no link to the Houthis or a British oil tanker.

Yemen’s Houthis, backed by Iran, claimed to have targeted a container ship bound for Israel, following the US Central Command’s report of two anti-ship missiles fired by the militant group in the southern Red Sea. The Houthis, who control much of Yemen including the capital, have since October attacked in the Red Sea commercial vessels they say have Israeli links or are sailing to Israel, in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. Against this backdrop, a video has gone viral on social media showing a vessel burning in the middle of a sea, with the claim that a British oil tanker was attacked by the Yemeni rebel forces. The caption states, “A British oil derivatives ship burned off the coast of Yemen’s Hodeidah today after being targeted by a missile”

Fact Check-

Our investigation began with a reverse image search of key frames from the viral video, which led us to a report by the Omani newspaper Alroya. The report states, “The Royal Oman Police indicated that a fire accident occurred in a launch in the territorial waters of the Sultanate of Oman off the coast of Hasik Niyabat in the Dhofar Governorate, loaded with a group of goods heading to the Republic of Somalia, and its crew, consisting of 11 people of Indian nationality, was evacuated by citizens, all of them in good health, with one of them injured. He sustained minor injuries and was transferred to receive the necessary treatment”.

As per the Times of Oman report, a ship caught fire in the Sultanate of Oman’s territorial waters when it was en route to the Republic of Somalia with 11 Indian citizens on board.

In further search, we found news report published by the Arabian Daily also.

All the reports confirm that the boat with 11 Indian nationals on board caught fire in Oman’s territorial waters. The crew, however, was promptly rescued. Notably, neither report mentioned Houthis, any kind of terrorist attack, or the involvement of a British oil tanker.

In detail search, we discovered the original video shared by the official twitter account of the Oman Police with the same details.
