Images from the library of China shared as the world’s largest library in U.S. named after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar

The viral images show the Tianjin Binhai Library in China, which opened to the public in 2017. There is no well-known library in the United States named after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

A post featuring a few images of a large white building is being widely shared on social media with the claim that the United States has opened the world’s largest library in the name of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. One of the viral images shows a large white spherical structure at the center of the building. Bookshelves running from the floor to the ceiling line the white walls in all the photos. 

The caption of the viral image reads, “America opened the world’s largest library in the name of India’s messiah Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar! Jai Bhim Jai India Jai ​​Constitution” (Translated to English)

Fact Check- 

By conducting a reverse search, we discovered the viral images were posted to Arch Daily, an architecture-focused website. According to the article, the images show the Tianjin Binhai Library in the Binhai district of Tianjin, a coastal metropolis outside Beijing, China. The article stated that the library was completed through collaboration between MVRDV, a Dutch architectural company, and local architects from the Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute (TUPDI).

In further search, we also found an article from CNN which stated that these images are from the Binhai Library located in Tianjin city of China.

We also came across a video published on the YouTube channel of Business Insider on 10March, 2018, shows the Tianjin Binhai Library. The description states that this library is a book lover’s dream come true. 

The Tianjin Binhai Library, Tianjin, China, is spread in 33,700 square meters, has five levels enough shelf space for 1.2 million books. It was completed by Dutch architecture firm MVRDV and local architects from the Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute. It’s nicknamed “The Eye.”

Time Magazine published a video on 26 November, 2017 captioned “Take A Peek Into China’s Futuristic—And Controversial—New 1.2 Million-Book Library | TIME.” The film featured images from the Tianjin Binhai Library, which opened to the public on 1October, 2017.

This Library bears no connection with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. We also looked into whether any libraries in the United States were named after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. There were no reports of any libraries named after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in America. Afterward, we discovered that the tallest statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar outside of India was recently unveiled in the United States on 14 October 2023.

Conclusion- 

Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral image to be False. The viral images show the Tianjin Binhai Library in China, which opened to the public in 2017. There is no well-known library in the United States named after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
