Crocodile spotted on Chennai road- fake video shared

This video is not related to Chennai. This was denied by Supriya Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary Environment Climate Change & Forests, Govt of Tamil Nadu.

Amid relentless rain lashing Chennai and neighbouring districts of Tamil Nadu in the wake of Cyclone Michauang, an adult mugger crocodile was spotted crossing the Perungalathur-Nedungundram road near the state capital, reportedly in the early hours of 4 December.

Against this backdrop, a video showing a crocodile passing through the waterlogged lanes is widely circulating on social media. Users claim that this crocodile was spotted in the waterlogged roads of Chennai.

The caption of the post states, “Crocodile ventures into the residential areas in Chennai due to floods”.

Fact Check-

We started our investigation with the help of keyword search on Google whose results led us to a tweet by Supriya Sahu, additional chief secretary, environment, climate change and forests. It states, “Please do not spread fake news and create panic. This video is not from Chennai. This has been fact checked by TN Government”.

As per reports, a video of the incident surfaced on the internet where a person on a two-wheeler was seen stopping his vehicle after spotting the crocodile. As people started to share the video Supriya Sahu, additional chief secretary, environment said there are a few mugger crocodiles in several of the water bodies in the city and the particular crocodile has come out due to rains and there is no harm if it is not provoked.

Also, we have already debunked this viral video in 2022. This crocodile video is from Shivpuri City in Madhya Pradesh. A rescue team rescued this crocodile on August 2022 and released it into a nearby lake. You can read the fact check below-
