Several social media users have shared a video claiming to show a humanoid robot working as a waitress in a restaurant.

We began our investigation using reverse image and keyword search on Google and the results led us to a Youtube video, dated November 25, 2023, headlined, “Chinese Waitress who pretends to be a humanoid robot”.

The description part of the video states, “In this video, I explore the fascinating story of a Robot-waitress in China, a 22-year-old Chinese waitress who pretends to be a robot while serving customers at a hotpot restaurant in Chongqing city. She moves in a jerky and robotic way, speaks in a monotone voice, and says things like “Hello, I am a robot. I will serve you today.” Some people are amazed by her performance and think she is a real robot, while others are skeptical and say she is just a human in disguise.

In further search, we obtained information about the viral video from the website Business Insider. According to the article, the woman is not a humanoid robot but a dancer, and the restaurant owner is featured in the clip. Additionally, the news agency South China Morning Post has released a video clarifying that the individual is a professional dancer. The video showcases her impressive footwork while she competes in dance competitions.

We also found a video of her being interviewed by a Chinese television outlet during a dance competition.

While the statement regarding the viral video may not be accurate, as per reports, China’s advanced technological advancements and its plan to build humanoid robots that resemble humans make this statement more believable and logical. Furthermore, in 2016, China introduced “Jia Jia,” the country’s first humanoid robot, widely recognized for its remarkable human-like qualities.
