A video of UK PM Rishi Sunak using a hammer has gone viral after the prime minister appeared to be using the tool incorrectly. A video widely shared seemingly shows Rishi Sunak uses the side of a hammer to hit a nail; he was mocked for having no clue how to use a hammer. 

The opposition parties and people shared the video claiming it showed that the leader could not use a hammer properly. This was not the first time Rishi Sunak has faced criticism for appearing not to know how to use everyday objects. Let’s check the truth.

Fact Check-

We began our search by relevant keywords on Google and the results led us to a report published by the Guardian on 24 November, 2023. It states that Rishi Sunak was mocked on social media for ostensibly having difficulty handling a hammer, after being told to use it sideways as part of a craft session.

The report adds, “Sunak was taking a lesson in hammering jewellery in Farsley in West Yorkshire during a visit. A clip of his technique went viral as it showed him using the side of the tool and struggling to hit the metal hard enough to drive it downwards…But in a fuller version of the clip, the jewellery crafter sitting alongside Sunak instructs him to use the side of the instrument. He replies: ‘Sideways?’ and she says: ‘Yes.’ “.

In further search we found more report of this incident. As per reports, Prime Minister visited a jewellery-making studio in Yorkshire and can be seen sat at a workbench next to Emma White, who was running the class. But the full video from Mr. Sunak’s visit showed that the craftswoman working with the PM actually told him to use the flat bit of the hammer. She can be heard to tell the prime minister, “Use this bit”. Mr Sunak asked, “Sideways?” before the jewellery maker said: “Yes.”
