Did Shakib Al Hasan get ill-treated in Bangladesh after the defeat in the World Cup? Know the truth

This video is not recent. It shows the fans manhandle Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan during a commercial event in Dubai in March 2023.

Bangladesh became the first country to be eliminated from the World Cup when they crashed to a seven-wicket defeat to Pakistan. Due to the poor performance of Bangladesh team in the ICC Cricket World Cup, team captain Shakib Al Hasan had to face a lot of criticism.  Against this backdrop, a video is going viral on social media showing captain of the Bangladesh cricket team being ill-treated by the public when he returned to Bangladesh after World Cup 2023.

A 25-second video went viral on social media in which Shakib is seen surrounded by the crowd from all sides and is being pushed and shoved. After which they are barely seen surviving. This video has been claimed as recent. Due to the defeat in the World Cup, he was beaten up at the airport. It is written in the caption accompanying the video that, “This happened to Shakib when he returned to Bangladesh after poor World Cup campaign Bangladeshi people are top tier ret@rds”.

Fact Check-

We started our investigation by running a reverse image search on one of the key frames from the video. The results led us to a report published by the Wion News published on 17 March 2023 with a caption, “Fans manhandle Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan during a commercial event in Dubai”. According to the report, “Following the home series against England, Shakib flew to Dubai to inaugurate a gold jewelry shop owned by Arav Khan – a fugitive who is accused of murdering a police officer four years back. Arav allegedly killed an inspector of the Special Branch (SB) unit of the police, Mamun Emran Khan, and has been on a run since”.

Shakib was heavily criticized when he arrived for the inauguration for the showroom of Arav Khan. As per reports Shakib was interrogated by the Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police for participating in a fugitive business event. 

In further search, we came across the viral video uploaded by a YouTube channel named RTV News. Below which a caption in Bangladeshi language has been added. The translation shows that the viral video shows the ill-treatment meted out to Shakib by expatriates in Dubai.

Taking account of this evidence, we can understand clearly that the viral video is not related to the recent World Cup.
