Australian players drinking beer from a shoe is not from ICC World Cup 2023

This video is not recent. It shows the Australian team celebrating its victory over New Zealand in the 2021 T20 World Cup.

Australia won the sixth ODI World Cup title by defeating Team India. Aussies won the final by six wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium inAhamedabad. 

Aussie all-rounder Mitchell Marsh posed for a photo with his foot on the trophy after lifting the cup, which was controversial by some. After Marsh’s photo went viral, another video is being shared on social media. After winning, the video is being shared saying that the Aussie players poured beer inside their shoes and drank it.

The video shows The Australian duo of Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade was seen drinking from a shoe .The caption of the post states, “Australian team celebration after winning world cup 2023”.

Fact Check-

We first looked for news reports to see if any similar incidents had recently been reported from ICC world cup and could not find any credible ones. We used relevant keyword search and found an Indian express report dated 15 November 2021 containing a screenshot from the viral video. According to it, the clip showed Australian players Matthew Wade and Marcus Stoinis celebrating their maiden T20 World Cup triumph by drinking from a shoe. This video was reportedly shot in Australia’s dressing room and was shared by the International Cricket Council.

In further search we came across also found a tweet from the official Twitter account of the International Cricket Council dated 15 November, 2021. It is noteworthy that the original video had a logo of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 in the top-right corner. This logo was hidden by emojis by those sharing the clip now as a recent celebration.

Drinking from a shoe, called “the Shoey” is a popular way of celebrating in Australia, as per reports the ‘shoey’ celebration was introduced to the world by Aussie Formula One star Daniel Ricciardo, who had celebrated his victory in the German Grand Prix in 2016 by drinking champagne from his shoe.

Conclusion-

Fact Crescendo has found the claim made along with the viral video to be Misleading. The video of Australian players pouring beer inside their shoes and drinking is not the current one, it shows Aussies’ victory celebration when they won the Men’s T20 World Cup in 2021.
