Old video of car ramming into protesters shared linking to Israel-Hamas War

This incident happened on 9 Sept 2023 during a judicial reform protest in Tel- Aviv, Israel. It has no link to the current Israel- Hamas war.

An ongoing armed conflict between Israel and Hamas-led Palestinian militant groups has been taking place chiefly in and around the Gaza Strip since 7 October 2023. Hamas-led Palestinian militants launched a multi-pronged invasion of southern Israel from the Gaza Strip. As of 14 November, 2023 according to the Hamas-run Gazan Health Ministry, more than 13,000 Palestinians, including 5,500 children, have been killed.

Against this backdrop, a video showing a car running over some people flying the Israeli flag is being shared on social media, with the claim that the video depicts Israeli settlers running over Israeli protestors and causing injuries.

The caption of the post states, “Israeli settler runs over Israeli protesters. Do you condemn Hamas? #IsraeliTerrorists #FreePalestine#Gaza_Genocide”.

Fact Check-

We started the investigation with a reverse image search on Google which led us to a similar video released on the Reuters YouTube account on September 10, 2023, with the caption, “Car drives through Israeli protesters in Tel Aviv.”

The description states, “A car drives through a crowd of Israeli protesters blocking a main road in Tel Aviv. Tens of thousands of Israelis protested in cities across the country against judicial overhaul plans ahead of a key decision by the Supreme Court”.

A report published in Times of Israel from 10 September states that a car rammed into a group of protestors who were demonstrating against the judicial overhaul reforms in Israel. Among the injured was a 25-year-old woman who required medical assistance for a leg injury. The report mentions that a father and son were in the car. The father claimed that he tried to take over from his panicked son who was driving, but accidentally hit protesters at a roadblock. No mention of ‘settler’ in the news report.

The report also included Kann News’s post on Twitter.

Israeli judicial reform protests– From January to October 2023, large-scale protests took place across Israel in response to the government’s push for a wide-ranging judicial reform. The Israeli government passed a reasonableness bill in July that takes away the power of the Supreme Court and other courts in the country to overturn a government decision that seems unreasonable.

These evidences confirm that the viral video predates the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. The incident has no link to the current war.

Conclusion-

Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be False. This incident happened on 9 Sept 2023 during a judicial reform protest. It has no link to the current war.
