Old video from Egypt shared as Israel’s raid on Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza.

The viral video is from the Rabaa Massacre in Egypt and it dates back to 2013. It has no link to the raid on Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza.

Amid the ongoing Israel-Palestine war, Israeli forces have raided al-Shifa Hospital, where thousands of Palestinians are sheltering, following days of heavy attacks in the area surrounding the complex in Gaza City. Israel claimed that its forces found evidence that Hamas uses hospitals to store explosives and weapons for terror activities. Against this backdrop, a video is going viral on social media with a claim that it shows Israeli forces shooting inside Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital.

The caption states, “Israeli forces shooting inside al Shifa hospital”.

Fact Check-

We carefully observed the video and went through the comments under the post and found that it was an old video from Egypt. Using this information, we conducted a keyword search, which led us to a longer and clear version of the same video on the YouTube channel of the Egyptian news organisation Rassd News Network (RNN), which was uploaded on 16 August, 2013. The caption in Arabic states, “Heavy shooting at detainees at Rabaa Hospital on the day of the massacre”.

 Rabaa massacre is considered to be one of the deadliest in Egypt. In 2013, large protests were organised demanding the reinstatement of the country’s first democratically elected president, Mohamed Morsi. Egyptian security forces forcefully dispersed two sit-ins by supporters of the late Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in Nahda and Rabaa al-Adawiya squares, in what was later described as one of the darkest and deadliest days in the country’s modern history, when hundreds were indiscriminately killed during protests.

Further searches led us to similar footage of destruction and chaos at a hospital in an Al Jazeera documentary titled “Massacre in Rabaa”, uploaded on YouTube on 17August, 2016 featuring the footage and interviews with survivors, medical staff and journalists. 

According to reports, the Egyptian forces used armoured vehicles, bulldozers, ground troops and snipers on rooftops carrying live ammunition, to attack the protestors at Rabaa al-Adawiya Square, Cairo on 14 August 2013.Human Rights Watch reported over 1,000 deaths including identified bodies, unidentified bodies and missing individuals.

Conclusion-

Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the video to be False. An old video from the Rabaa Massacre in Egypt was shared to claim that it shows Gaza’s Al Shifa hospital.
