That Palestinians Faking Injuries Through Make-Up Is False; Read Fact Check

In the midst of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, social media have flooded with misinformation and misleading content. A common issue is the manipulation of online videos, often taken out of context to spread a false narrative.

One such video showing people putting on make-up is going viral with a claim that people in Palestine are faking injuries to portray themselves as victims of Israeli attacks.

Fact Crescendo received this video with fact-check requests on our WhatsApp Tipline (9049053770).

We found that the viral video is old and is actually footage from a film set. Using it to claim that Palestinians are deliberately staging injuries is both misleading and false.

WHAT’S THE CLAIM?

The viral video features a makeup artist applying fake blood and creating injuries on people. This 23-second clip has been widely shared on social media with a caption that reads: “How to FOOL UNITED NATION in believing that Palestinians & Gaza people are victims. And that Hamas is a peaceful organization that didn’t kill 1700 News in Israel. Welcome to ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY of CRAFT.”

It has been claimed that the video is proof of how Palestinians deceive the United Nations into believing that people in Gaza are victims.

FACT-CHECK

Using keyword search, we found a news report on the Turkish news channel TRT World uploaded in 2017 that features the same video clip.

According to the report, it is from a film set of a project by the Doctors of the World organization. The news segment highlights the story of Mariam Salah, a makeup artist in the Gaza Strip, and her choice to work in a field predominantly occupied by men.

The news anchor in the report mentions, “We’re on a film set in the Gaza Strip. Make-up artist Maryam Salah is creating horrific looking injuries on actors taking part in a project by French charity Doctors of the World. They hope to raise awareness of the dangers faced by Gaza residents.”

The viral video is actually from a behind-the-scenes recording of a film set back in 2017, and it bears no connection to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

In recent reports, the toll from Israeli air attacks on Gaza has resulted in at least 1,900 Palestinians killed and 7,696 wounded, while in Israel, the number of casualties stands at 1,300 killed and 3,400 wounded.

On Friday, Israel’s military mandated the evacuation of 1.1 million individuals in northern Gaza within a 24-hour period.

CONCLUSION

The viral video clip is actually footage from a film set in 2017 and has no relation to the ongoing Israeli-Gaza conflict. The claim that Palestinians are staging fake injuries to manipulate public perception is false. Misleading claims can spread misinformation and hamper efforts to understand and address the complex realities of these situations.
