Amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, a video of a paraglider crashing into a high-voltage electric power line and bursting into flames has gone viral on social media. Paragliders were one of several modes of transportation that Hamas used to launch its surprise terrorist attack on Israel.
The caption of the video states,“Watch as this member of Hamas (loses control?) & crashes his #paraglider straight into a high-voltage electric power line, which bursts into flames, immediately killing him.
Let’s check the truth
Fact Check-
We started our investigation by running a reverse image search on one of the key frames from the video. The results led us to a similar video uploaded on YouTube on 18 June 2023 with a caption, “paraglider hit high-voltage transmission lines and caused fire”.
Using these hints we conducted a keyword search on Google and found a news report published on the Korean news outlet dated June 16, 2023. The report quoting the Jeju Fire and Safety Headquarters, stated that a 60-year-old man was caught in a high-voltage line and died while paragliding on a beach in Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo in South Korea. He was riding a powered paraglider near Seopjikoji Beach in Jeju died after getting caught up in a high-voltage wire and suffered a high-voltage electric shock. The firefighters who arrived immediately cut off the electricity. The fire department explained that a strong current flowed through the high-voltage wires, making it difficult for rescue teams to enter the area.
In further search we found other Korean media outlets also reported the same information at the time.
Conclusion-
Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the video to be False. Paraglider crashing into a high-voltage electric power line is not related to Israel- Hamas conflict. It is from South Korea and dates back to June 2023.
