Old video from New Zealand shared linking to recent flood in New York

The viral video shows floods in Auckland, New Zealand in January 2023, not from recent flood in New York.

A state of emergency was declared in New York after severe storms led to flash floods in several parts of the city in late September.On this backdrop, a video of several people walking in a flooded supermarket has gone viral as recent visuals from New York, United States.

The video shows people wading through an aisle of a flooded supermarket. A person can be seen pushing a small child who is seated atop a trolley, with others following behind.The caption states, “People grocery shopping in knee high water during the apocalyptic flooding in New York City #flashflood #flooding #flood #newyork #newyorkcity #nyc #brooklyn #rain #streetflooding #brooklynflooding #Manhattan | #NewYork”

Fact Check- 

By performing a reverse image search on Google with the key frames of the video led us to a similar video uploaded on the official YouTube channel of News.com.au on 28 January, 2023. The caption states, “New Zealand supermarket floods as state of emergency declared”. Its description mentioned that the video shows a supermarket in Wairau completely flooded.

In further search, we came across a news report in Yahoo News on 28 January, 2023. This article featured screenshots extracted from the widely shared video. According to this report, the video was shot at the Glenfield supermarket in Auckland, New Zealand.

As per reports, Auckland witnessed floods after heavy torrential rains, which led to the loss of at least three lives in late January this year. The city declared a state of emergency following an unprecedented 249mm of rainfall within 24 hours.

We also found another video report from The Chronicles Australia that also mentioned that a New Zealand supermarket in Wairau had been flooded as a state of emergency was declared across the city. The video uploaded was the same viral video but in a shorts form.

These evidences clearly prove that this viral video is not from the recent floods of New York.

Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be False. The viral video shows floods in Auckland, New Zealand in January 2023, not from recent flood in New York.
