Old video from Spain shared linking to recent flood in Libya

The viral video shows floods in Zaragoza, Spain in July 2023, not from recent flood in Libya.

Thousands of people were killed and at least 10,000 were missing in Libya in floods caused by a huge Mediterranean storm that burst dams, swept away buildings and wiped out as much as a quarter of the eastern coastal city of Derna. A storm named Daniel caused two dams to burst, leading to floods in the coastal city of Derna.

On this backdrop, a video of a flood washing away vehicles is going viral on social media. The video shows cars being swept away by torrents of water and mud. People are also seen clinging to the top of the car to escape. One of the most striking of these is a young woman jumping out of a car and trying to escape.Users is claiming that these visuals are from Libya. The caption states “Thousands have died in Libya so far due to a flood. #Libya”

Fact Check-

By performing a reverse image search on Google, the results led us to a report by a Spanish-language news website named Heraldo de Aragón. This report, published on 7 July, carried several visuals of a flood in Spain and mentioned that the viral video showed flooding in the country’s Zaragoza city. The Third Belt, turned into a real river, swept away the vehicles and drivers who were surprised by the storm.

The province of Zaragoza has been hit by heavy rains accompanied by hail, which caused extensive damage in the region. The strong storms also caused flooding on stretches of road, where numerous vehicles were immobilized by the amount of water.

In further search we came across a video uploaded on YouTube on 10 July, 2023 by ‘9 News Australia’ under the title ‘Woman stranded on car roof in Spanish floodwaters’. The video explains that this is the scene of the lightning flood in Spain.

We looked for more visuals of the floods and came across a post on twitter which had shared the same video 7 July with the title “Massive flood after heavy rains in Spain washing away cars”.

Conclusion-

Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be False. The viral video shows floods in Zaragoza, Spain in July 2023, not from recent flood in Libya.
