Is this a video of the destruction during the recent flood in Libya? Know the truth?

Recently, Libya faced a catastrophic natural calamity. A few days back, storm Daniel hit the Derna city of the country followed by a massive flood that killed more than 5000 people. According to the reports, more than ten thousand people are missing. 

In the backdrop of this, a video of a flood washing away vehicles and buildings is going viral on social media. Users are claiming that the visual is from Libya. 

However, Fact Crescendo found the claim to be false. This is an old video from Japan and not of the recent flood in Libya.

Fact Check- 

A Google Reverse Image Search on a keyframe of the viral video led us to the same video uploaded on a YouTube channel in 2021. According to the information, this incident took place in Atami city in Japan. An extremely severe seasonal rain led to landslides and flood-like situations in the Izuyama region of the Atami city. More than 10 houses were destroyed and 19 people were reported missing.

According to a CNN report, around 20 people went missing and dozens of houses were destroyed in a mudslide in Atami city of Japan in 2021. Rescue operations were carried out and many people were evacuated from the region. 

According to an NPR report, around 19 people were missing in the mudslide that took place in Atami City, southwest of Tokyo in 2021. More than 80 homes were destroyed. According to the authorities, during the rescue operation, 2 people were found dead by the coast guards. More than 35,000 people were evacuated from the region. 

Flood in Libya

As per NDTV, Derna city in Libya was hit by a storm named ‘Daniel’. Due to heavy rain and storms, the two dams located in the mountains above the city collapsed resulting in a massive flood. This flood killed more than 5,000 people and more than 10,000 were reported missing. According to the authorities, many more bodies of the victims are still lying under the ruins.
