Is this video of a man praying on top of a ruined building in Morocco after the recent earthquake? Know the truth

On 8 September 2023, a strong earthquake of 6.8 magnitude hit the southwest region of Morocco. According to the latest report, around 2,000 people lost their lives and 2059 people were seriously injured. A rescue operation had been initiated to take out the people trapped under the ruins.

In the backdrop of this, a video of a man praying on top of a ruined building is going viral on social media. It was claimed that this video was from Morocco after the recent earthquake.

However, Fact Crescendo found the claim to be false. This is an old video from middle-east and not from Morocco.

What’s the claim?

A social media user shared the video and claimed that this is a visual of a Masjid that got demolished after a recent earthquake in Morocco but the Azaan was carried out at the correct time.

Fact Check-

A Google Reverse Image Search on a keyframe of the viral video led us to the same video posted on Facebook in 2018. The user mentioned that this is a video of a man doing Azaan in Syria. Below you can see the video.

We also found the same video uploaded by a social media user in 2016. The user mentioned that this is a video of an Iraqi man praying on top of the ruined Nouri Mosque in Mosul. You can see the video here.

We found an image from the viral video published on a website voicing against the attacks on Muslims and the places of their worship in different parts of the world. Speaking about the viral incident, it was said that this place is the remains of a mosque that was attacked by Saudi Arabia and those countries whom Saudi Arabia supports. This blog dates back to 2019.

Further search led us to a Malaysian News website in which we can see the same image published in 2019. According to the report, this is an incident from Syria and Gaza belt. The mosque was destroyed during an attack.

Conclusion:

Fact Crescendo found the claim to be false. The viral video is not from Morocco after the recent earthquake but an old video from middle-east. The mosque was said to be destroyed during an attack.
