Old video of Hollywood movie set shared as plane crash landed in California following Hurricane Hilary

This video is from the set of the 2005 Hollywood movie “War of the Worlds” at Universal Studios in California, United States.

Tropical Storm Hilary hit southern California on 20 August, 2023, triggering flash floods, mudslides, and severe winds across the state and prompting to declare a state of emergency. Tropical storm warnings were also issued in Los Angeles and San Diego. In its aftermath, several posts and videos are going viral on social media. One such video is now going viral showing a plane’s wreckage, several destroyed cars, and a wrecked home. Sharing the video users claimed tropical storm Hilary caused a plane crash in Long Beach. The caption states “BREAKING: A plane has just crash landed in Long Beach, CA as a result of hurricane Hilary yall stay safe out there”

But Fact Crescendo found the viral claim is false. Let’s check the truth.

Fact Check- 

We started our investigation by running a simple reverse image search on Google, with the key frames of the video and whose results led us to the same video posted on YouTube 6 years ago. The information provided with the video says that it is the set of the plane crash of the film ‘War of the Worlds’ of Universal Studios Hollywood Cinema. 

War of the Worlds is a 2005 American science fiction action film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Josh Friedman and David Koepp, based on H. G. Wells’ 1898 novel.

We did a keyword search and discovered a longer version of the same video uploaded to the YouTube channel “Theme Park Connect” on 14 June, 2020. As per this channel, the video was from the location of Steven Spielberg’s movie “War of the Worlds”, released in 2005. The description also said the site is still present at Universal Studios Hollywood in California, United States.

We found out that this viral video is located near Universal Studios in America. You can also see it on Google Maps below. 

We also could not discover any reliable reports of a plane crash attributed to tropical storm Hilary in Long Beach, California.
