Video of people attacking BJP leaders is from Darjeeling, not Manipur

The video shows an attack on BJP leader Dilip Ghosh in Darjeeling in 2017. It is unrelated to the ongoing violence in Manipur

Manipur has been shaken by massive violence following an ethnic conflict between the state’s Meiti and Kuki communities. A disturbing video of two Kuki women in Manipur being paraded naked and sexually assaulted by a large mob of men has sparked widespread protests across the country. On this backdrop social media is flooded with so many videos related to Manipur. A video of a mob chasing and attacking a group of men wearing saffron scarves is in circulation with a claim that the incident is from Manipur.  One user shared the video with the caption “The people of #Manipur have recognized that the people of the rest of the country will soon do the same thing, #BJP people have come wearing saffron coloured #Manipuri gamchha to show sympathy, people took off their dhoti. #Manipur Burning”.

Fact Crescendo found that the claim made along the video is to be misleading; it is neither from Manipur nor related to Manipur violence.

By comparing both videos we found that they show the same incident,  it was captured in Darjeeling in 2017.

In further search we found a tweet dated 6, October 2017 by Rifat Jawaid, which contains matching visuals from the viral video. The video is captioned “BJP’s Bengal chief Dilip Ghosh attacked in Darjeeling, leaders thrashed mercilessly by Gorkhas”

As per the ABP News report dated 6 October, 2017, Dilip Ghosh was manhandled and chased in Darjeeling by protestors. The protestors were supporters of the expelled Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leader Binay Tamang.
