The video shows an attack due to a political rivalry between IUML & CPI (M) in 2016 in Kerala. It is not a Muslim-led attack on Hindus, and there is no communal angle

A video showing some people throwing stones at a building has gone viral on social media. Those who shared the video claim that it show recent visuals of Muslim men throwing stones at Hindu Bungalows in Kerala and threatening them to vacate.

Fact Check-

A reverse image search on the Google with the key frames of the video led us to a news bulletin uploaded by the Manorama News YouTube channel on 15 August 2016. The video was uploaded with the caption, “More than 50 houses attacked in Nadapuram”. According to this report, viral visuals show activists of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) attacking houses & Offices of CPI (M) leaders along with BJP and Congress in Nadapuram, Kerala. The assault was reportedly in retaliation for the murder of an IUML worker allegedly by CPI (M) workers on 13 August, 2016, two days before this attack.

As per reports over 50 residences, largely belonging to Congress, BJP, and CPM supporters, were targeted and attacked in Nadapuram at the time. The attackers disguised their faces while carrying out the attack. The police gathered CCTV footage of the attack and charged 50 persons in connection with it.

In further search we found a Deccan Chronicle report from August 14, 2016. As per the report the Congress and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leaders condemned the murder of Aslam allegedly by CPM activists. “Muhammed Aslam, one of the 17 acquitted IUML workers in the C.K. Shibin murder case of January last year, was hacked to death at Thuneri, Nadapuram, on Friday evening.”

The News Minute

Several Media outlets have reported this incident at that time. As per Hindustan Times report “On August 12, Mohammed Aslam, a 22-year old Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) worker, was brutally murdered in broad daylight. Aslam’s hands were chopped off and his body had 67 stab marks. The murder was allegedly committed by CPI(M) workers to avenge the killing of 19-year-old Shibin CK, a member of CPI(M)’s youth wing Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), on January 22, 2015. Aslam was an accused in the Shibin murder case although he, along with others, had been acquitted by a special court on June 15, 2016.

Later on 28 August, 2016, Mathrubhumi reported that the police arrested the main murder accused Ramesh, a CPM activist, who hatched the conspiracy and had identified Aslam for the killers.

Conclusion-
Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral image to be False. The attack was due to a political rivalry between IUML & CPI (M) in 2016 in Kerala. It is not a Muslim-led attack on Hindus, and there is no communal element.
