The viral image does not show the wedding ceremony of Nirmala Sitharaman’s daughter

The viral image does not show the wedding of Nirmala Sitharaman’s daughter. The couple in the image are Indian fast bowler Prasidh Krishna and his wife Rachana.

In a private wedding ceremony held in Karnataka on June 8, Parakala Vangamayi, the daughter of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, tied the knot with Pratik Doshi, an official from the Prime Minister’s Office.

In this context, an image that shows a bridegroom tying the knot to a bride while she is seated on a person’s lap is being widely shared on social media claiming to be a picture from the wedding of  Nirmala Sitharaman’s daughter.

The caption of the viral post states, “Yesterday it was the marriage of the daughter of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Is this the same one? Leave it, or not, that is later but why is it sitting in the lap of the priest? Which Brahmin Jihad is this” (Translation from Hindi)

Fact Check-

At first we searched for pictures of Nirmala Sitharaman’s daughter, Parakala Vangamayi’s wedding with Pratik Doshi. We discovered several media reports about the marriage here and here. However, upon closer inspection, it is clear that the couple in the viral image is not ParakalaVangamayi and Pratik Doshi.

In further search we noticed the watermark ‘Sakal’ on the top right corner of the viral image. Keeping this in mind, we conducted  a keyword search and found the same image uploaded on the official Facebook page of Sakal on June 9, 2023. The post caption reads: “Team India’s fast bowler famous Krishna got married on 8th June. The celebrity married his girlfriend Rachana. Many cricketers attended the wedding. His engagement was held on June 6.”

Prasidh Krishna, a fast bowler of the Indian Cricket team who shared this image on his Instagram account on 08 June 2023. According to reports, Prasidh Krishna tied the knot with Rachana in a traditional South Indian wedding ceremony.

Furthermore, we found an article by WikiBio, which stated that the person on whose lap Rachana Krishna was sitting in the photograph was not a priest, but her own father.

Moreover an article by ATC Wedding details how the customs and traditions of South Indian weddings shed light on the significance of various rituals, especially the ritual of ‘Kanyadaan’, which involves the symbolic act of the bride sitting on her father’s lap. During this ritual, the father symbolically gives his daughter away to the groom, emphasising the preciousness of the gift.

Thus, we can clearly understand from the above information that the viral image does not show the wedding ceremony of Nirmala Sitharaman’s daughter.

Conclusion-

Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral image to be False.  The image does not show the wedding of Nirmala Sitharaman’s daughter but Indian fast bowler Prasidh Krishna and his wife Rachana.
