Currently, a photo of an injured lady is going viral on social media. This image showed the before and after of her face. It was claimed that this is an image of a Hindu lady whose Muslim boyfriend attacked her with acid.

However, Fact Crescendo found the claim to be false. This is an old incident from London which is viral with communal claims.

Fact Check-

A Google Reverse Image Search on the viral image led us to The Independent’s website in which the same image of the victim was published in 2017. According to the report, the person in the image is a London-based model, Resham Khan. On her 21st birthday, Resham Khan and her brother were attacked with acid by a man. Both Resham Khan and her brother were severely injured in this incident. Later, police arrested the accused named John Tomlin.

A CCTV video of the incident was also aired on The Independent’s website. You can also watch the same video on the YouTube link given below.

According to the Evening Standard report of 20 April 2018, acid attack victim Jamil Mukhtar condemned the court’s verdict saying that the accused should have been given a death sentence. The court sentenced the accused John Tomlin to 16 years in prison.

An argument took place between Mukhtar and Tomlin as he and Resham Khan were sitting in a car. When the driver returned to the car, Tomlin attacked Resham Khan and Mukhtar by throwing acid through the vehicle’s open window. Resham and Mukhtar were taken to the hospital after the incident. Their head, neck, and ears were injured. Resham Khan lost her sight in this attack.

From the above facts it is clear that the victim is not Hindu and the accused is not a Muslim person. The name of the victim is Resham Khan and that of accused is John Tomlin. Also, this is an incident from London and not India.

BBC News YouTube channel had an interview with Resham Khan where she narrated the incident and her experience. When Resham Khan and her brother were attacked with acid, they tried to drove away but crashed and the accused ran off after the attack. After the accused attacked with acid, both of them were in severe pain and were screaming for water. Below you can see the details of the incident.

Conclusion:

Fact Crescendo found the claim to be false. The acid attack victim’s name is Resham Khan and the accused is John Tomlin. This incident took place in London and not in India. An old incident of an acid attack on a London-based non-Hindu model viral with a communal claim.
