Old video from Hyderabad shared as CCTV footage of train accident in Odisha

The video dates back to 2019 and shows a train collision in Hyderabad, not recent train accident in Odisha.

A devastating crash involving three trains in the eastern Indian state of Odisha has killed 275 people and more than 1,000 injured many of them seriously. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the Railway board has recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) enquiry into the deadly accident. Soon after the shocking train tragedy several social media users are sharing a video of two trains colliding with each other is being shared on social media platforms linking it to the recent train accident in Odisha.

People have shared this video as the real CCTV video of the accident. The caption reads “CC TV footage of train accident #trainaccidents #trainaccidentinodisha #Odisha #TrainAccident #viralvideo

Fact Check-

By closely watching the footage, we found which features a Voice of America (VOA) watermark on it. Keeping this in mind, we conducted a keyword search and found that the same video was uploaded on Voice of America’s official YouTube channel on 12 November, 2019 following a train collision in Hyderabad. VOA has credited the Indian Railways for the footage in the caption of the YouTube video.

The caption states “Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage released by Indian Railways showed the moment when two trains collided head-on in India’s southern city of Hyderabad, Monday, November 11. At least 16 people, including a train driver, were injured when the accident took place Monday morning. The trapped driver was rescued after being stuck for six hours. Six coaches of a local train and three coaches of Hundry Express derailed from the tracks due to the collision impact. (Reuters)”

The same footage was reported by India Today also.

According to Indian Express report published on 12 November, 2019, the accident happened when a Hyderabad Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) train collided with the Hyderabad Kurnool Hundry Express on 11November. “The accident left the loco pilots of the local train and at least 30 passengers injured. According to a statement by South Central Railway, six coaches of the MMTS and three coaches of the Hundry Express were affected in the collision. Officials said an error in signalling resulted in the local train switching tracks and colliding with the stationary Intercity Express.”
