Video does not show protest outside Nawaz Sharif’s house after Imran Khan’s arrest

The video is old and has nothing to do with Imran Khan’s arrest

Pakistan’s anti-corruption agency arrested former Prime Minister Imran Khan at Islamabad High Court on Tuesday in a corruption case. Following this protests and clashes erupted between Khan supporters and police.

Amidst this, we came across a video that shows a massive crowd gathered on the streets and is being shared on social media. Users who shared the video claimed that the visuals are from London, where people were protesting outside former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif over the arrest of Imran Khan.

The caption of the post states, “This isn’t Pakistan. This is London.. Imran Khan protest goes global – A large number of Pakistanis are protesting Imran Khan’s arrest in front of Nawaz Sharif’s house in London”.

Fact Check-

We began our investigation by conducting a reverse image search on Google, which led us to longer versions of the circulating footage, which can be seen in a tweet from 17 April, 2022 with the description “Aerial view of protest outside Nawaz Sharif residency London”. Though the footage does show a demonstration in London, it was captured more than a year before Imran Khan’s May 9 arrest. which describe the scenes as relating to separate protests against another former Pakistan Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif.

In further search we discovered a report published in The Express Tribune, a Pakistani daily, on 17 April, 2022. It mentioned that people of Pakistani community protested outside Nawaz Sharif’s and Imran Khan’s former wife Jemima Goldsmith’s residences. The protest came after Imran Khan was ousted in a parliamentary no-confidence vote on 9 April 2022.

The report contains some tweets which carried the visuals from the protest which looked similar to viral video. When we compared an image from the report to a keyframe of the viral video, we found that both of them are from the same incident. You can see the comparison below.

As reported by The Sun residents on London’s Dunraven Street frequently witness protests. It was stated that the rallies are generally staged in front of Avenfield House, where Nawaz Sharif and his family live. The report also carried similar visuals as seen in the viral video.

Conclusion-

Fact Crescendo has found the claim made along with the viral video to be Misleading. The video is from April 2022 and has nothing to do with Imran Khan’s recent arrest.
