This video does not show the visuals of people looting a shop at violence-hit Manipur.

This video was taken at a secondhand goods store in Lucena City, Philippines. On February 24, a large crowd streamed into the shop during a special sale.

Violence erupted in Manipur on 3 May after the Naga and Kuki tribes organised a Tribal Solidarity March against the move to give Scheduled Tribe status to the majority Metei community. According to reports protesters vandalised and burned hundreds of houses, churches, temples, and vehicles during the violence. As armed forces were rushed into the state, the Manipur DGP said that protestors looted arms and ammunition from 23 sensitive police stations in the Imphal Valley and other districts.

In this scenario, some posts have gone viral with the claim that people are looting shops amidst the violent protests in Manipur, Rajesh Sharma, the Aam Aadmi Party’s in-charge for northeastern states took to Twitter and shared an image which shows people looting a shop. Caption of the video states “BJP is a failed govt in Manipur, its responsibility of govt to save property & lives of people? Shame on BJP”.

Fact Check-

We conducted a reverse image search on Google with the keyframes of the viral video to find the original source. As a result, we found the the same video on Yahoo News on 1 March. According to this report, the video was from a secondhand goods store in Lucena City in the Philippines. Caption reads “Frenzied bargain-chasers shoved each other and clambered on racks during a sale at a used clothes shop. The crowd poured inside the secondhand goods store even before the roll-up doors were fully opened in Lucena City, the Philippines on February 24”.

In further search we discovered the same video uploaded by Vice News on YouTube on 3 March. As per this report, the video was from a kind of thrift store in Lucena City. According to Vice News, the shop announced new arrivals on February 24, and following this, a large number of people camped outside the shop even before its doors opened. The report also quoted the owner of the shop, Mildred Garcia Bundialan, who said that though she was used to customers’ excitement whenever new arrivals were announced, the wildly excited crowd who appeared outside her store on February 24 surprised her.

The video was also posted by media sites in the Philippines with the same explanation. Some of these organisations attributed the video to a Facebook account called Mildred Ukay Suki. On February 24, this account posted the same video.

The location of the video was also stated was Lucena City in Mildred’s post. Mildred is the owner of Ukay Suki, according to her Facebook bio.

Conclusion

Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be False. This video was taken at a secondhand goods store in Lucena City, Philippines. On February 24, a large crowd streamed into the shop during a special sale. Not related to Manipur.
