Unrelated Video showing damaged buildings shared as Devastation caused by the recent earthquake in Tajikistan…

An old video that has been around for a few weeks on the internet is going viral as the damage done by recent earthquake in Tajikistan.

A massive earthquake hit the central Asian country of Tajikistan yesterday morning. The epicenter of this earthquake was reported to be in the Gorno-Badakhshan semi-autonomous region that borders Afghanistan and China. The magnitude of the earthquake was initially reported to be 6.8 on Richter scale; however, the Chinese news agency Xinhua reported the magnitude of the tremors felt in Xinjiang region to be 7.2.  The tremors were also felt in Tajikistan’s neighbouring countries like Afghanistan, China, etc.

The world recently witnessed the colossal damage caused by a series of earthquakes that hit southern Turkey and Syria, earlier this month. The reports of another massive earthquake when the memories of this disaster are still fresh are naturally disturbing and depressing. However, thankfully no reports of casualties have been reported so far.

Following the recent earthquake in Turkey and Syria, many videos flooded the social media platforms. We had previously debunked several unrelated videos incorrectly attributed to Turkey and Syria on social media. You can read some of those fact checks by clicking the link given below:

Similarly, an old video that has been around for a few weeks on the internet is going viral as the damage done by recent earthquake in Tajikistan.

Archived Tweet

In the above tweet, we can see damaged buildings captured using a dashcam of a moving vehicle. The tweet says, “An earthquake of about 7.2 magnitude shook Tajikistan at 8:37am (0037 GMT) on Thursday at a depth of 10 km (6 miles), Chinese state television CCTV reported, citing the China Earthquake Networks Center. #Tajikistan

The same video has also been shared on Facebook along with few other videos of earthquake in Tajikistan.

However, is this video in any way connected to the recent earthquake in Tajikistan? Let us find out.

Fact Check

We searched the video by using Google reverse image search on some of the screenshots and found the video published on the video sharing social platform, Daily Motion. The video was uploaded 16 days ago on Daily Motion.

Daily Motion

The title of the video is as follows: “50 hours have passed after two major earthquakes in Turkey” The description of the video says, “50 hours have passed after two major earthquakes in Turkey and there are still people under the rubble. food shelter heating etc. There are people in need of help. A large number of aid continues to go to the earthquake area.

The same video can be found with the same description on YouTube as well. This video was also published earlier this month coinciding with the earthquakes in Syria and Turkey. However, we did not find any credible evidence to ascertain that this video is from Turkey/Syria or is related to the recent earthquakes there.

Conclusion

From our investigation, it is clear that the viral video has no relation the earthquake that hit Tajikistan and its neighboring countries yesterday. The video has been around on the internet since last few weeks.
