2014 video from Russia shared as recent helicopter crash in Kyiv, Ukraine

The video dates back to 2014 showing a helicopter Crash in Gelendzhik, Russia. It has no relation with the recent helicopter crash in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Fourteen persons including Ukraine’s Interior Minister and a child were killed when a helicopter crashed in fog near a nursery outside Kyiv on 18 January.The casualties included the three helicopter crew and six others on board.Witnesses in Kyiv said Russia’s war was to be blamed for the disaster.

Amidst this, a video showing a helicopter bursting into flames is widely circulating on social media. Users claim that this video shows the helicopter crash in Kyiv that killed 16 including on board including Ukraine’s Interior Minister.

The caption of the video states, “16 people including Home Minister died due to a helicopter crash in #Kyiv!”

Fact Check– 

We started our investigation by running a reverse image search on Google, the results led us to the same video published on Youtube on 5 September 2014. The caption of the video states, “Disastrous Mi-8 Helicopter Crash in Gelendzhik, Russia (Sep-5-2014)” According to the information given in this video, the incident took place in Gelendzhik, Russia in 2014.

Keeping this in mind, we searched for media reports related to this incident, according to Military.com, the video shows amilitary Mi-8 Hip utility helicopter crashed during an air show in Russia. The chopper, belonging to the Russian “PANH Helicopters” air company (whose fleet of about 30 aircraft performs scientific and aerial services), was taking part to the opening phases of the Gidroavisalon 2014 in Gelendzhik, which is an international hydro air show that gathered 180 Russian companies and 14 foreign delegations.

After carrying a flag, the helicopter performed a heavy landing, “bounced” on the tarmac, broke into two pieces and fell back to the ground, catching fire.


A Russian new report mentioned there were three people on board. Two of them, the commander and the flight mechanic, died on the spot. The co-pilot Igor Khodak was delivered by ambulance to the department of burn resuscitation of the Regional Clinical Hospital. 

Conclusion- 

Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be False. The video does not show the helicopter crash in Kyiv that killed 16 including those on board, including Ukraine’s Interior Minister. The video dates back to 2014 and shows a helicopter Crash in Gelendzhik, Russia.
