Media organizations shares old image as wreckage of the airplane crash in Nepal

The image dates back to 2012 showing the wreckage of the Dornier aircraft in Kathmandu.

At least 68 people were killed on 15 January when an aircraft went down near the city of Pokhara in central Nepal. This was the country’s deadliest plane crash in more than 30 years.Seventy-two people – 4crewmembers and 68 passengers – were on board the ATR 72 plane operated by Nepal’s Yeti Airlines when it crashed, Yeti Airlines spokesperson Sudarshan Bartaula said. 

Amidst this, an image showing burnt wreckage of an aircraft is widely circulating on social media with the claim that it shows the wreckage of the recent Nepal airplane crash. This image was used by several media organizations such as ANI andDNA Indiain their report about the plane crash in Pokhara, Nepal.

Fact Check- 

We started our investigation by running a reverse image search on Google; the results led us to a news report published by the International Business Times on 28 September 2012. According to the report, a plane crash near Nepal’s capital Kathmandu had killed 19 people on board including seven Britons. The small plane was operated by the private airline Sita Air. The caption of the image states, “People look toward the crash site of a Dornier aircraft in Kathmandu.” The image has been credited to Reuters.

Keeping this in mind, we searched for this image on Reuters Pictures website. According to the description of the image, it shows a Nepalese police officer standing in front of the wreckage of a Dornier aircraft, owned by private firm Sita Air, at the crash site in Kathmandu September 28, 2012.

The captions reads, “A Nepalese police officer stands in front of the wreckage of a Dornier aircraft, owned by private firm Sita Air, at the crash site in Kathmandu September 28, 2012. A small plane crashed shortly after takeoff from the Nepali capital of Kathmandu on Friday, killing 19 people, including seven British and five Chinese passengers, an airline official said.” Navesh Chitrakar captured the image.

Thus, it is clear that the viral image does not show the wreckage of the recent airplane crash in Pokhara, Nepal.

Fact Crescendo found the viral image claiming to show the wreckage of the recent airplane crash in Pokhara, Nepal to be False. The image dates back to 2012 and shows the wreckage of the Dornier aircraft, owned by private firm Sita Air, at the crash site in Kathmandu.
