2013 video from Afghanistan shared as recent Pokhara airplane crash

The video shows a US cargo plane crash at the Bagram Air Force base in Afghanistan in 2013.

At least 68 people were killed on 15 January when an aircraft went down near the city of Pokhara in central Nepal. This was the country’s deadliest plane crash in more than 30 years. Seventy-two people, 4 crew members and 68 passengers – were on board the ATR 72 plane operated by Nepal’s Yeti Airlines when it crashed, Yeti Airlines spokesperson Sudarshan Bartaula said. 

Amidst this, a video showing the plane crashing onto the ground and bursting into flames is widely circulating on social media. Users claim that this video shows few minutes before the plane crash in Pokhara, Nepal.

The caption of the post states, “Pokhara Nepal Plane, a total of 72 people were on board in Nepal, more than 16 bodies recovered.”

Fact Check-

We started our investigation by running a keyword search on Google, whose results led us to the same video published by CNN on 2 May 2013 with the caption, “How the 747 crashed in Afghanistan.” According to the report, the incident took place on 29 April 2013 where the flight Boeing 747 crashed at the Bagram Air Force base in Afghanistan.

According to a report by the Guardian and the BBC, the crash has resulted in the death of all seven American crewmembers on board. This US civilian cargo plane crashed at Bagram airbase in Afghanistan. Nato’s International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) said there were no reports of militant activity in or around the base at the time of the crash.

Conclusion- 

Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be False. The video does not show the recent airplane crash in Pokhara, Nepal. The video shows a US cargo plane crash at the Bagram Air Force base in Afghanistan in 2013.
