No, FIFA is not displaying Pele’s feet in its museum

There has been no statement or decision by FIFA to keep Brazilian football legend Pele’s feet in a museum following his death on December 29, 2022.

Following the demise of Brazilian football legend Pele at the age of 82 on December 29, last year, a social media claim went viral stating that FIFA, the world’s football governing body, would keep the former Brazilian international player’s feet at the museum and that his family had given permission.

Fact Check-

First and foremost, we looked for an official statement from FIFA. After Pele’s death was announced to the public last Thursday, we discovered three official press releases from the world’s football governing body. Unfortunately, FIFA made no mention of how it would affect Pele’s feet following his death last week.

FIFA issued its first press release following Pele’s death on December 29, expressing its sadness and shock and detailing what the former Brazilian international had done in football history.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino expressed his admiration for Pele and his place in football history in its second press release on December 30.

According to FIFA’s most recent press release  on January 2, Gianni Infantino paid a tribute and farewell to Pele before he was laid off in the Santos stadium.

Futher we used keywords to find news from credible sources. Unfortunately, we do not see trustworthy media outlets covering this type of news.

Next, we looked up the details of the viral image, which turned out to be of Pele’s feet. We discovered an Instagram post by American photographer Annie Leibovitz after conducting a reverse image search. Leibovitz took this photo in 1981 and posted it on Pele’s birthday, October 23, 2020.
