Are PM Modi’s image on the gift bags provided at the FIFA World Cup 2022 opening ceremony in Qatar?

Fans at the stadium for the Qatar World Cup Opening Ceremony which was followed by the match between Qatar and Ecuador received a gift bag with the logo of FIFA world cup. PM Modi’s image has been photoshopped.

With the Kick off of FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar from 20, November 2022, social media is flooded with images and videos of the tournament. We noticed a viral image of a bag with PM Modi’s picture and the FIFA World Cup logo taken in the football stadium. 

Wasim Khan, BJP Minority Morcha President in Mumbai, shared this image along with the quote ‘My PM (Modi) My Pride’ on social media. It quickly went viral, and some of the posts can be found here and here.

Fact Check- 

We started our investigation by running a reverse image search on Google, whose results led us to media reports of the US Sun published on 21 November, 2022 titled ‘BAG OF THE NET Inside incredible gift bag given to fans at World Cup stadiums with football, flags, and bottle of PERFUME’ mentions that the fans that attended the opening ceremony of World Cup 2022 received an extra special gift from the host country Qatar. But the image of the bag did not have the picture of Modi in it.

In further search we discovered the original image on the verified Facebook account of Former MP Haji Shahid Akhlaq with a caption 

“Qatar has created such a history that the whole world can now think of breaking this record. Inshallah

Qatar has gifted expensive perfumes like Mushk and Ud to every common and special guests.

Such an example of guest Nawazi set that whites will never forget.

#FIFAWorldCupQatar2022”

We also found some tweets with the original image posted on 20 November 2022 with the caption “Gifts for fans at the stadium today #Qatar2022”

We came across a YouTube video posted on 21 Nov 2022 with the caption “Qatar’s Expensive Gifts To Spectators at the World Cup” which also lacked PM Modi’s image on bags.

A website named Gomhuriaonline  also posted the original image on 20 November, 2022 with a caption “Qatar presents gifts to the fans at the opening of the 2022 World Cup” which also did not have PM Modi’s image on it

It is found that PM Modi’s picture is added to the original picture of a gift bag given at the opening ceremony of World Cup 2022 in Qatar using photoshop and is being shared on social media.

Conclusion-

Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral image to be Altered. Fans at the stadium for the Qatar World Cup Opening Ceremony which was followed by the match between Qatar and Ecuador received a gift bag with the logo of FIFA world cup. The photograph of Prime Minister Modi has been doctored.
