Video from 2018 shared as footage of recent earthquake in Indonesia

The viral video shows the footage of an earthquake that hit Bali in 2018. The video has no relation with the recent earthquake in Indonesia. 

A powerful earthquake killed more than 160 people in Indonesia‘s West Java province on 11 November, with rescuers searching for survivors trapped under the rubble amid a series of aftershocks.

A video showing a group of people continuing to offer their prayers despite the earthquake shaking the floor is widely circulating on social media. Users claim that this video shows the footage of earthquake that hit Indonesia.

The caption of the video states, “#Earthquake of 5.6 magnitude hits Indonesia, 56 died and 700 injured so far. worshipers continued to pray Salah. SubhanAllah. May Allah bless them and have mercy on them.”

Fact Check-

We started our investigation by running a keyword search on Google to find relevant news report about the viral video. The results led us to a news reports published by the Outlook on 6 August 2018. The headline of the report states ‘Indonesian Imam Continues Leading Prayer As Earthquake Hits.’ The video shows an Indonesian imam continuing to lead prayers in Bali as a deadly earthquake struck neighbouring Lombok.

The white-robed Islamic leader was leading prayer at a mosque in Denpasar on the holiday island of Bali when the shallow 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck.

According to a BBC report, a spokesman for the Musholla As-Syuhada mosque told BBC News Indonesia that worshippers heard sounds from “the ceiling and the roof like it was going to fall, so we ran”. But the imam, named Arafat, stayed as he believed “his life was only for God to take” and so the mosque was “the best place to take shelter”.

According to a report by the New York Times, the 7.0-magnitude temblor on the island of Lombok claimed at least 98 lives and injured an additional 236 people. It left at least 20,000 people homeless, and sent thousands of tourists fleeing. 

Conclusion-

Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be Partly False. The viral video shows footage of an earthquake that hit Bali in 2018. The video has no relation with the recent earthquake in Indonesia. However, it is true that West Java in Indonesia was hit by an earthquake recently in November.
