The video does not show Hindu-Muslim clashes in Leicester after the India- Pakistan match in September 2022. The video shows a protest against the death of Mahsa Amini in London.
A video showing a huge mob clashing amongst each other is widely circulating on social media with the claim that the incident took place in London where people from the Hindu and Muslim communities fought over a cricket match. This video is coming in after an incident of mob violence in Leicester after India defeated Pakistan during the Asia Cup 2022.
Fact Crescendo found that this video is not related to any communal clash.
The caption of the post states, “Multiculturalism at its finest. Muslim vs Hindu battle each other, and police, in London over a cricket match played thousands of miles away. Brits speaking out against the constant violence on their streets are being labelled Far-Right Extremists…MSM at it’s finest also.”
Fact Check-
We started our investigation by running a reverse image search along with a relevant keyword search on Google. The results led us to the same video uploaded by News18 on 26 September with the caption, “#AntiHijab Protest: Dozens of protesters clash with police in London outside the Iranian embassy.”
Keeping this in mind, we ran another keyword search that led us to multiple news reports about this incident. According to GB News, five people were injured and twelve were arrested as the Iranian protesters clashed with police.
A longer version of this video posted by Daily Mail UK stated that Iranian protests turned violent in London. Police were also deployed as clashes erupted at anti-hijab protests in London following the death of Mahsa Amini. Members of a religious procession appeared to tussle with those protesting against the Ayatollah regime while others attempted to breach the walls of the Iranian Embassy. The video was posted on 26 September 2022.
The Daily Mail gave the video courtesy to Paul Brown. Upon searching we found that a Twitter user named Paul Brown had posted the same video on 25 September.
In the caption Paul Brown wrote that this video was shot on the streets of Marble Arch, London. The video shows Iranian protesters and Arbaeen people fighting from the anti-hijab protests that erupted in solidarity with Iran, following the death of Mahsa Amini.
Below you can see the location of the Marble Arch London on Google Street View.
According to the Independent UK, thousands of people protested in the streets of London following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in Tehran, Iran. On September 16, Ms. Amini – also known by her Kurdish name, Jina Amini – died after being detained by so-called ‘morality police’ for allegedly not following the country’s dress code while visiting the capital city.
In the days since her death, demonstrations have erupted globally and at least 83 protesters have been killed in Iran, according to human rights groups.
Conclusion-
Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be False. The video does not show Hindu-Muslim clashes that broke out in Leicester after the India- Pakistan match in September 2022. The video originally shows protests in solidarity with Iran and against the death of Mahsa Amini in London. She recently died in custody following her arrest by Iran’s morality police.
