FACT CHECK- Priya Malik did not win gold in Tokyo Olympics

On 24th July 2021, Mirabai Chanu won India’s 1st medal at Tokyo Olympics with a silver. She bagged the silver medal by successfully lifting 115kg in clean & jerk. While the whole country is cheering and celebrating the achievement of Mirabai Chanu at the Tokyo Olympics, a post is going viral on social media. The post going viral on social media claims that India won the first gold at the Tokyo Olympics in wrestling. The post claims that Priya Malik won India’s first gold at the Tokyo Olympics today.

The caption of the post mentions “India Won Gold In Tokyo Olympic 2021 – Priya Malik, Wrestler Priya Malik”

Fact Check- 

We started our investigation by running a keyword search on Google to find out whether Priya Malik has won a gold medal for India at the Tokyo Olympics. The results led us to news reports published on 25th July 2021. The headline of the report states “Priya Malik Clinches Gold For India At World Cadet Wrestling Championship In Hungary.” According to the report Priya Malik won the women’s 73 kg weight category gold medal at World Cadet Wrestling Championship by getting the better of Belarus wrestler Kseniya Patapovich 5-0 in the final. 

Priya Malik’s World Wrestling Championship victory comes a day after weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won a silver at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. 

We found that the official Twitter Handle of My Gov India has tweeted about Priya Malik’s victory and congratulated her. The tweet made on 25th July 2021 mentioned that “Another glory for the country! Congratulations to Wrestler #PriyaMalik for winning the GOLD medal in the 73 kg category of the World Cadet Wrestling Championship in Budapest, Hungary. All hail our #NariShakti!”

Prasar Bharati News Service has also posted the news of Priya Malik winning a gold medal for wrestling in the World Cadet Wrestling Championship in Budapest, Hungary. They tweeted “Priya Malik wins Gold in the 73 kg category of the World Cadet Wrestling Championship in Budapest, Hungary today.”

Further we also found that so far India has won one silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. India is at the 18th ranking in Olympics 2020 and her total ranking is 13th.

Conclusion- Fact Crescendo found the above-mentioned post to be False. Priya Malik won a gold medal at the World Wrestling Championship in Hungary. She has not participated in the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
