List of UP’s Congress Minority Cell members shared with a communal angle

A viral image of a document widely circulating on social media claims that the Congress party in Uttar Pradesh did not appoint a single district chairman from the Hindu community. The list belongs to the Congress’ district chairman in Uttar Pradesh which only mentions Muslim names. The list has been digitally edited  which mentions the sentence “Not a single Hindu” aiming to claim that not a single Hindu member has been elected as the Congress’ district chairmen in Uttar Pradesh

The caption of the post mentions that “Congress be renamed as Indian Muslim League now….as conspiring to divide the nation again….”

Fact Check- 

We started our investigation by running a keyword search on Google to find the list circulating on social media which led us to the same image published by the Twitter handle of “INC Sandesh” on December 9, 2020. According to the caption of this tweet, these are appointments for Uttar Pradesh PCC (Pradesh Congress Committee) Minority Department.

With relevant keyword search we found that ANI UP had also tweeted these images on their official Twitter handle on 9^th December 2020. The posted mentioned “Congress appoints District Chairmen/City Chairmen for Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee Minority department

Fact Crescendo contacted Shahnawaz Hussain, UP’s District Chairman Minority Department who confirmed “The list shows the names of the chairmen from the minority cell which means that the elected chairman would also be from the minority community, and not the majority community.”

Conclusion- Fact Crescendo found that the viral image on social media is being shared without context. The list shows the District Chairmen appointed by the Congress in December 2020 for its Minority Department in Uttar Pradesh. This is the reason why the list has names from the Muslim/minority community only.
