FACT CHECK: This photo is not from Thuruk Village in Assam’s Dima Hasao

Multiple posts with the photo of a beautiful snow covered landscape is going viral on Facebook in Assam with the claim that it is from a recent snowfall in Thuruk, a village in Dima Hasao. The captions on most of the viral posts which have gone viral recently, have a description of the village and of the dip in temperatures leading to the village being covered in white.

Fact Crescendo found that the photo isn’t recent and isn’t from Dima Hasao in Assam. Here’s how: 

Fact Check Methodology 

At first we ran a Google Reverse Image Search and saw that it is an old photo which is available on a number of online platforms. 

One website published the photo on February 11, 2017 in an article with the headline, “Winter in the south of France”.

Here are some other platforms where it was published:

Of these, Pixabay was the first platform where it appeared. 

We saw in the description that the photo was originally clicked on November 18, 2011 on a Nikon D5000 and was published on March 3, 2011. 

Following this, we ran a Google search with relevant keywords to check if there was indeed snowfall at Dima Hasao and saw news reports on a layer of Frost that had covered certain areas after a dip in temperatures recently.

Conclusion 

The photo used in the viral posts is from 2011 and not from the recent Frost in Thuruk Village in Assam’s Dima Hasao. It has been shared with Misleading.
